Angostura Carypton
Also known as “Carypton”. Defunct proprietary specialty liquor produced before Prohibition by J.G.B. Siegert & Co. of Angostura Bitters fame. It was rather like an alcoholic falernum insofar as it contained a rum base, lime juice, sugar, and unspecified “herbs and spices indigenous to the West Indies”. It was manufactured in Port of Spain, Trinidad and ceased production sometime before American Prohibition. While the formula of Carypton is unknown, a serviceable ersatz version can be compounded from 3 parts spiced rum to 1 part fresh lime juice and 1 part white sugar syrup. Herbal or spice-flavored liqueurs is an abstract category for sweetened and flavored spirits of various dilutions with herb and/or spice flavoring.
