Canadian whiskey is a generic category for whiskey produced in Canada, traditionally predominately of rye, but today principally of other grains; sometimes as a single-malt, but most often as a blended whiskey. Crown Royal and Canadian Club are noted brands, though there are many. Contemporary drink recipes will generally be explicit about specifying canadian whisky. Twentieth Century recipes can be tricky to interpret. Some recipes from Prohibition onwards will call for “rye”, and might mean either an American straight rye whiskey or a Canadian whisky. The two were somewhat closer to each other in that era, because Canadian producers—Seagrams in particular—stepped into produce mainstream whiskey during Prohibition. The vast majority of Canadian whisky from the late 20th Century until today is something else: a mild blend of aged whiskies with little to know “rye character”. So it all depends on context, and sometimes the needed context isn’t there, in which case, it’s down to your good taste and intuition.
