Bay leaf refers to the aromatic leaf (dried) of one of a variety of plants, ubiquitous in stews, soups and sauces. Bay leaves are generally cooked with but removed prior to eating. The flavor of “bay leaves” varies depending on the variety, which is generally connected to one cuisine or another, but can be compared with oregano.
