Gula jawa is generic for pure, dark brown Indonesian coconut palm sugar, sold in semi-moist cakes or loafs. Gula jawa is produced from the boiled sap of coconut palm trees. Gula jawa is less intensely-sweet than refined cane sugars and possesses more flavors, comparable to (but distinct from) those that molasses lends brown sugars.
