Also known as “hooch”. Moonshine is a category of (generally illegal) home-made distilled grain spirits. Typically unaged and generally unrefined, but not necessarily either, leaving considerable room for intepretation. In the context of mixed drink recipes, those that call for “moonshine” imply an unaged grain spirit that possesses significant flavor, preferably of the source grain.
