Generic for a style of Japanese green tea that is charcoal roasted until it is brown (no longer green). When brewed, the resulting tea is nutty, earthy and vaguely caramely rather than grassy, and the caffeine is somewhat lower. Hojicha is sometimes milled to a powder, like matcha.
