Ambergris is a clump of a waxy substance produced in the intestines of sperm whales and is sometimes found washed ashore on beaches. An ancient incense, ambergris was once profoundly important to the perfume business and was one of the factors that led to over-hunting of sperm whales in the 19th Century. As a result, possession and trade in ambergris is illegal in some countries. Ambergris is an ingredient in early punches.
